Xylitol was discovered to have cavity fighting properties in the 1940’s. Europe’s Scandinavian countries began using this natural sugar substitute when there was a shortage of common sugar. It was soon observed that children of these countries, had fewer cavities than children of countries still using sugar!
Xylitol is a natural sugar derived from corn cobs, corn stalks, nuts and birch trees. It is found naturally in many fruits like raspberries, strawberries, and kiwis and is also produced in nuts, vegetables, trees and even within our own bodies!
Xylitol is a 5 carbon sugar, unlike the 6 carbon molecule found in common sugar, making it unique in the defense of dental plaque. Xylitol inhibits the ability of the cavity-causing bacteria to adhere to the tooth and produce the acids that cause tooth decay. Clinical studies show that using xylitol in toothpaste, gum, mouth rinses and candies can reduce cavity causing effects in the mouth by 80%.
Xylitol is beneficial to anyone looking to reduce the risk of cavities; children or adults with poor oral hygiene, expectant mothers that could pass on the cavity causing bacteria (streptococcus mutans ) to their newborn and those people who suffer from dry mouth caused by medications, radiation or chemotherapy. The benefits don’t stop there. Xylitol has also been found to reduce ear infections in children by 40% and helps decrease the incidence of sinus infections with the use of a xylitol based nasal wash.
Dr. Kayser and his hygiene staff are excited about this natural cavity fighter and carry the product in their office. Please be sure to ask us how this can become a part of your daily dental routine.
Accucam IntraOral Camera - The Accucam is a fabulous educational tool that allows the patient to see what the doctor sees. This tiny camera can zoom in on a tooth that has lost a filling, showing signs of decay or identify a lesion on the roof of their mouth. By putting the image on a T.V. monitor, the patient is able gain a greater understanding of what is taking place in their mouth. They are then able to make a more informed decision regarding their dental treatment.
Laser Caries Diagnosis - A dental laser is used to identify as well as monitor early decay. This painless procedure allows a laser beam of light to read through the thickness of the patients enamel. Depending on the quantitative number given to the enamel site, the doctor can determine if a cavity is present in the tooth or if it can be monitored.
If decay is present, the laser will also give the doctor an indication as to which direction the decay is tunneling through the tooth. This information is invaluable when trying to remove the minimum amount of tooth structure and still restore the tooth. It allows the doctor to place a smaller, less invasive filling.

Cancer is a scary word, but the more you know about it, the better able you will be to protect yourself and the ones you love. You may think that if you are a non-smoker, particularly a young one, this topic is not of concern to you. If so, please think again. Read more.
